Denton County, Texas Inmate Search

A Denton County inmate search is the process of finding information about an inmate currently in custody or who has passed through the local jail system. The Denton County Sheriff’s Office runs the county jail and manages inmate records in compliance with the Texas Public Information Act (PIA).

Notably, Denton County also has several city jails run by their respective police departments. Examples include the City of Denton Jail, Lewisville City Jail, and Flower Mound Jail. These jails also offer inmate searches for their detained population. However, city jails are temporary detention/holding facilities, not permanent ones. These facilities are mainly utilized for initial booking, for holding individuals while they sober up, or as a temporary measure before transferring them to a larger facility. Individuals who require longer pre-trial detention are moved to the county jail.

A typical Denton County inmate search returns an inmate’s personal information, charges, booking data, and bond information.

Individuals interested in locating Denton County inmates housed in state prisons may use the Inmate Information Search application on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) website. The user will need a name, TDCJ number, gender, SID number, or race to locate an inmate. Those in federal prisons may be found through the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) inmate Locator. A number or name is required for the search.

How to Find an Inmate in Denton County Jail

The Denton County Sheriff’s Office provides free online access to Denton County Jail inmate records through two distinct databases: the Jail Bond Records Search and the Jail Records Search. These portals allow individuals to search for inmate information from any location. However, the search only yields basic details, and the results are not considered valid for official use. Alternatively, individuals may conduct an in-person search for inmate information.

To conduct an in-person search, one may visit the Sheriff’s Office during normal business hours to speak with records staff. This approach is recommended for comprehensive searches, obtaining copies of records, and accessing confidential inmate records. Please note that a minor fee for searching or copying may apply.

The Denton County Sheriff’s Office offers several ways for friends and family to send money to inmates. Interested persons can deposit money into the inmate’s trust account at the jail’s front lobby kiosk or online/phone through the jail’s vendor.

In-person depositors may deposit funds by credit card, cash, or debit card. If the inmate’s trust account has over $300, families/friends will not be allowed to send money via credit or debit cards. However, a cash deposit can be made.

Specifically, the Denton County Jail provides access to inmate records online via the Jail Bond Records Search portal and the Jail Records Search tool on the Denton County Sheriff’s Office website. Meanwhile, the City of Denton Jail publishes inmate information daily on its Jail Custody Report page. The site reveals the inmate’s full name, booking date and time, charges, and bond amount paid.
